Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

The IPCC is a scientific intergovernmental body set up by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Its work is based on scientific evidence and reflects existing viewpoints within the scientific community. Its membership comprises  member governments of the WMO and by the UNEP who participate in decision making and review reports; and a global community of scientists who write, contribute to and review the IPCC's work.

According to the IPCC, total annual emissions of greenhouse gases are currently rising, primarily as a result of human activity. Over the last three decades, greenhouse gas emissions have increased by an average of 1.6% per year with carbon dioxide
emissions from the use of fossil fuels growing at a rate of over 2% per year. Without additional policies in place, these emission trends are expected to continue. The IPCC estimates that under current policy arrangements, global energy demand and associated supply patterns based on fossil fuels – the main drivers of GHG emissions – will continue to grow.

This data is based on the
4th IPCC Assessment Report 2007.
Work has started on the 5th Report which is due for finalisation in 2014.
