Our approach
Other gases
The West of England Carbon Challenge focuses on carbon dioxide because it is the most significant greenhouse gas. If members produce other greenhouse gases, they will be measured and reported in terms of Carbon Dioxide equivalent (CO2e) as defined by the UK
Government's reporting and conversion protocols.
Types of emissions
Our methods of data capture and reporting are aligned to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The GHG Protocol divides emissions into three ‘scopes’:
Scope 1 emissions are those an organisation directly causes or controls. For instance, energy generated or used on-site in industrial processes or in fleet vehicles for organisations where transport is a core activity. Emissions from the combustion of biomass* and from non-Kyoto greenhouse gases are not included within Scope 1.
Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from energy purchased off site – like electricity.
Scope 3 emissions are indirect emissions resulting from an organisation’s activities, but are produced by activities that the organisation doesn’t control or own. For instance, this would cover emissions from the production of goods and services that the company buys from other companies, business travel, employees commuting to work, or emissions from the company’s products after they have been purchased.
* Biomass is not classified under any of the Scopes
