University of the West of EnglandUWE is responding to the challenges of a changing climate, whilst simultaneously moving in the direction of achieving our broader sustainability objectives. We are addressing climate change in all our processes and activities. This means not only are we reducing the carbon intensity of our operations (from procurement to resource use, to transport and buildings), but our students – the leaders and thinkers of tomorrow - are being exposed to the challenges and opportunities of creating a low-carbon and sustainable future.

Our gas consumption was cut by 46% in the academic year 2006/07. Since 2001 we have reduced our carbon emissions related to energy use in buildings by 25% and our target is a 30% reduction (from 2001 baseline) by 2011/12.

UWE is also responding strategically to the multifaceted challenges of sustainability and climate change. A Sustainability Board, chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor sets the agenda, whilst, a new Institute is directing our research and knowledge exchange endeavours in support of sustainability. We have also created a new internal group Knowledge Exchange for Sustainability Education to explore and promote pedagogic developments.

As an educational provider the University has a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and short course provision covering causes and mitigation of climate change, carbon management, adaptation to climate change and related matters. The University is developing new provision at BSc and MSc level which will focus on climate change and carbon management. The University’s short course programme includes a range of energy management, land use planning and transport courses which seek to ensure that future development activities contribute to climate stability, whilst providing the essential resilience needed to the impacts of inevitable climate change. The research activities of the University also contribute to these agendas and the Institute for Sustainability, Health and Environment provides a focus for a range of cognate activities.
