Targets
The West of England Carbon Challenge asks all organisations across the region to commit to making a collective cut in emissions to reach at least 10% by 2012. This aligns with the targets set by Business in the Community’s May Day Network, and covers steps one to three on the May Day Journey.
How does this target of 10% by 2012 fit with national targets?
The UK government has committed to reducing emissions by 80% by 2050. In December 2008 the Committee on Climate Change proposed a reduction of 34% by 2020, which became legally binding in April 09's Budget. Committing to cuts of at least 10% by 2012 makes this ultimate goal more realistic and achievable.
By April 2010 the Carbon Reduction Commitment will require organisations with half hourly electricity meters recording consumption of 6,000MWh or more to purchase permits for carbon emissions.
