Why join now? The imperative for action
Climate change is the biggest challenge facing humanity. Yet, despite the fact that it will profoundly affect every organisation and every region, our collective response is failing to match the scale of the problem. To speed things up, the UK Climate Change Act commits us all to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In December 2008 the Committee on Climate Change proposed a reduction of 34% by 2020. The Government made this target legally binding in April 09's Budget.
Hitting these targets means every organisation must play its part by reducing its carbon emissions each and every year. From 2010, the Carbon Reduction Commitment will impose carbon targets on larger emitters. It’s a challenging journey, but striving for 10% by 2012 makes the longer term carbon descent far more achievable. Getting to grips with your organisation’s emissions and monitoring them is the first step on th journey – and where the West of England Carbon Challenge can help.
